Triops Cannibalism

A Triops eating his companion. Music: Cannibalism Analysis from Membro Genitali Befurcator [Edit] To everyone: The Triops were fed regularly and enough. Proteins and the green stuff. Cannibalism is part of their nature. The larger one eats the smaller one. It happens. Not always but sometimes. The tank contains 16 liters of water. That’s way enough. The camera is out of focus because I just grabbed my photo camera from my desk and pressed record. I didn’t have time to borrow a real cam and set up a tripod.

How often do triops lay their eggs?

I bought a triops kit for the first time a week ago and only three hatched. One of them died and the other was subject to cannibalism. I read that they lay eggs every day. If so, when my single triops reaches full maturity, can a place him in a small container for a day or so to lay eggs? I don’t want to go the the wonderful project of getting eggs out of my tank substrate… can’t I just collect a bunch of them in a small container and the dry them out?

Triops cannibalism

I’ve never observed intra-specific predation in Triops cancriformis, and even sick and dying individuals are left alone by their tank-mates, but cancriformis will happily scavenge the remains of dead triops, even when alternative food sources are available. Triops have a short life-cycle and often die after failing to moult properly, so the survivors often have the opportunity to snack on their deceased fellows. This is my first attempt at making a soundtrack to go along with a video.

Triops

Triops are a three-eyed form of hard-shelled shrimp that have barely evolved in the last 70 million years, and are commonly referred to as living fossils. They are available as Sea Monkey-esque pets. I would recommend it if you enjoy growing creepy things. Unnecessary backstory: The directions advise that you only grow half of the eggs just in case you screw up the first time, and not to add the eggs later because the matured triops will eat them. This was not just true of the eggs; the single triops in the rounded jar ate all of the other specimens in the first batch. It was removed and the rest of the eggs were added. This out-of-focus video was shot somewhere around the end of that week during feeding. Soon after, the older lone triops developed a horrific growth and ceased to be. Soon after that, the larger of the two younger triops was found floating in the tank half-devoured. The last triops died days later. That last week was a horrific freakshow, but look at how cute they were here! Music: DJ TAKA – Blueberry Stream
