Making your own distilled water for Triops?

If I made my own distilled water (boiling water which takes out the minerals and chemicals), is this safe to use for my Triops to hatch? I have looked into jugs of distilled water already. I want to make my own distilled water!

  1. Just buy the jugs. Costs less than the fuel to make your own.

  2. Boiling water does not distill it or remove minerals and most chemicals (some will evaporate out but most remain) of the water in the pan used to boil it. It only kills bacteria and other organisms that may be present in the water. To distill water you have to collect the evaporated water that is leaving the pan. Many times the water needs to be distilled multiple times to remove all contaminants. By definition, distilled water contains dihydrous oxide and nothing else.

The triops packets say to use distilled water. I am not sure if they actually need pure distilled water, or just nice filtered water of a higher quality than tap water which can contain a lot of undesired elements. You might want to look into that. I am suspect as they reference that spring bottled water can be used as well, and I know for a fact that in many places the bottled water is of little difference to the tap water (in some places in California, the bottled water didn’t even reach the tap water standards). So you might have a chance where filtered tap water is acceptable. My niece has some triops and we just used the RO water from my store.
