I bought my son a Triops kit recently and they hatched. We had quite a few, but due to the fact to were a day older they ate the smaller ones. One of them is a normal looking Triops, the other…..
I don’t know. First off it has only one eye, not three, and its body shape is different. His shell extends over the full body and he has no tail. You can see his many legs through the shell. I have looked around the net, but I haven’t found a picture of one like it anywhere. Has anyone seen this before?
well all i can say is triops are a very…very…very… old pet that can have many mysteries behind it as it is over 300 million years old so anything strange can happen with these guys. obviously it grew from its juvenile stage and it is still thriving. i have about 20 triops in my 55 gallon community aquarium, sounds weird but makes it different. they never disappear…they lay eggs and more and more come. your son is going to have fun with these little guys, but remember they are fairly hard to hatch…well for me they are

Mixed in within Triops eggs tends to be the eggs of other vernal invertebrates such as Cyclops, Daphnia, Fairy Shrimp, etc. Most of the time, you’ll never see these creatures because Triops are the apex predator and will simply eat them before they get a chance to grow up, but occasionally one will make it to adulthood.
What you have in particular sounds like it could be a Clam Shrimp. Here’s a few pictures you could use for comparison:
