mine lives with a snail and i have caves and rocks and plants only one plant but i think they like rockes more there more durible to climb on and eat algae and also i dont have gravel i have the little stones mine has been good thus far for over a year and he keeps my tank 100% clean and they can live with any fish i think as long as the fish isnt super agressive (black piranhas, hungry red bellies, or elongs) and any other agressive fish that can fit the pleco in its mouth

I am no expert, just been blessed with 2 healthy red eared sliders girls for 36 yrs.
plus 3 adopted males 8, 5 and a 2 yr old. yr adopted from this site

  2. Plecos can live with almost anything, just be aware of the size that some species can grow to.(18″)

Snails OK, they may eat snail eggs or baby snails, but thats usually a good thing.

Triops – probably OK, although a large pleco may think they are a tasty snack if they catch one.

Gravel – they are not fussy, athough rounded gravel seems better than sharp.

They like rocks/caves/logs to hide in. Plants are fine with the smaller species, but the big ones are clumsy and will bulldoze most plants by accident.

Unless you have a big tank (55gal+) dont buy a common pleco. Look for one of the smaller species like Bristlenose, they are fine in tanks about 15gal+

  3. they like big rocks so they can hide in while they are small

be careful when choosing plants, as this fish loves to eat veggies and plants, almost any fish can live with plecos, except: another pleco, a fish with a big mouth that the pleco could fit in its mouth, and any type of fish with straight bellies such as “discus”, ALSO, no wimpy fish with plecos, plecos poop a lot, and this sppoils the water quickly unless u have very good bacteria community

EDIT: they prefer having dark gravel as a substrate, and yes they CAN live with snails, but in that case u will have 2 pooping machines in ur aquarium.

    i own a
55 gallon tank with one 5″ common pleco, 7″ red oscar, 4″ african ghost knife fish
20 gallon tank with a pair of convicts and fry
10 gallon tank with 3 zebra danios and 3 tiger barbs

  4. They’re pretty peaceful… they can live annything that is about the same size as them. I wouldn’t put a small pleco with a larger fish or a really aggressive cichlid

I used to have a pleco

  5. Plecos can live with any fish/invert(except saltwater fish). Sometimes plecos can live with each other sometimes they can’t(males get really territorial so it really depends). They prefer round/smooth gravel and they love rocks and plants to them its the more the merrier

I used to have a pleco
