Why is my triops swimming to the surface of the water?

My triops are swimming to the surface of the water. There is nothing interesting there but floating dirt. What are they doing?

Trying to get oxygen that is not available in the lower water, and I will place a bet that it is due to a nitrate (No3) build up. This will rob oxygen from your water making the fish want to get up high as there will be more oxygen there (No3 is heavier than O2) so the oxygen will be at the top.
Do a third water change – but when you take the water out use a gravel cleaner as this will take built up solids out of your gravel, which is a big contributor to No3. Then next week do the same again. This way with the weeks break you will be able to keep bacteria growth in the tank.

If you need any more info email me.

    Hope this helps.
